ALI CLE Book Manuscript Preparation Guidelines

At ALI CLE, we share your goal of rapidly producing an accurate, authoritative text that lawyers will find helpful in their practices. Toward that end, we ask that you abide by the following guidelines for the preparation and submission of your manuscript. Doing so will help ensure that the process from raw manuscript to finished publication moves quickly and efficiently.

If you are not familiar with our publications or need guidance concerning the style, format, and appearance of our publications, we would be happy to send a sample chapter to you.

If at any time you have any questions about your manuscript, please contact the Director of Publications at the address below.

  1. All manuscripts must be submitted in both hard copy (words on paper) and electronic versions (files that are either placed on a CD-ROM or ). Any accompanying graphics on the disks should be clearly labeled.

Hard Copy Requirements
  1. Use 8.5 x 11" white paper, with one-inch margins all around; please paginate each chapter separately. All pages must have page numbers.
  2. Print or type on one side only.
  3. Double space everything.
  4. Keep all pages, chapters, exhibits, and appendixes in order.
  5. In sending the hard copy, it is best to use a service that will trace the package.

Electronic Files
  1. If you are using word processing software other than WordPerfect or Microsoft Word, let us know.
  2. Separate each chapter of your manuscript into a new file�do not put the entire manuscript into a single file! That makes the file unwieldy and prone to crashes.
  3. Name each file of your manuscript with an obvious and recognizable designation; e.g.: "Chap 01." Please use a zero for all numbers under 10 so that the files will stay in the proper order when saved.
  4. Do not justify the copy. Use hard returns only at the ends of paragraphs, not lines. Do not add headers or footers. Do not use end-line hyphenation.
  5. Do not embellish chapter headings or other text with fancy graphics; they will only have to be stripped out when we begin work on the manuscript. If possible, do not use the automatic outlining or other automatic formatting features of your wordprocessing software.
  6. Do not use any "text box" features�copy may be lost or scrambled when we convert these text boxes.
  7. Use a basic font, such as Times Roman.

Presentation of Your Material
  1. Minimize footnotes, and use them only for citations to supporting cases, statutes, or other materials. Don't place extended discussions in the footnotes.
  2. Do not include in your manuscript pages of materials that have been photocopied from other sources�particularly primary sources such as statutes and regulations. While quotations from such sources (typed into your manuscript) are acceptable, anything more than a page should simply be cited to its original source.
  3. Minimize spot or pinpoint citations: "id." is not that important.
  4. We use the "Blue Book" for legal citations, with a few exceptions, one of which is the citation of books: include the author's full name, the book's full title, the publisher, and the year of publication.
  5. Many readers find that a table of cases is handier than strings of endnotes. You may want to consider including one in your book.
  6. Since we emphasize the practical nature of our books, the more checklists and sample form language you can include, the better.
  7. Include in your submission the electronic files for any charts and other graphic representations in your manuscript. As mentioned above, make sure these files are clearly labeled as such.
  8. For section headings within each chapter, please try to use the following style and numbering system:

§ 1.01 FIRST MAJOR HEADING (Boldface ALL CAPITALS, centered)

§ 1.01(a) First Subheading (Boldface Caps & lower case, flush left)

§ 1.01(a)(1) Second Subheading (Boldface italics Caps & lower case, flush left)

§ 1.01(a)(1)(A). Third Subheading. Text.(Italics Caps & lower case, indent paragraph, period following title, text follows period)..


Note: You need NOT insert coding for boldface and italics if it's too much trouble, but please follow the numerical format for headings and subheadings.
