Museum Professionals To Discuss Top Legal Updates, Compliance and
Regulatory Issues at the 46th Annual ALI CLE Conference

PHILADELPHIA, January 29, 2018.  American Law Institute Continuing Legal Education (ALI CLE) has announced that Legal Issues in Museum Administration 2018, cosponsored by Smithsonian Institution, will be held on April 18 - 20, 2018 in Boston, Massachusetts. This “go-to” conference celebrates its 46th year and gives museum professionals the unique opportunity to explore current legal developments, learn from a practical curriculum, and experience one-of-a-kind networking opportunities at some of Boston’s premier arts and science institutions.

A diverse faculty comprised of private practitioners, in-house counsel, and executive-level professionals from across the country will lead this multi-day program and offer sophisticated discussion and in-depth insights on critical areas and concerns facing museum professionals. This year, topics will bear close ties to areas relevant in today’s news cycle, including sessions on non-profit lobbying restrictions, immigration regulation impacts, and facility construction in light of natural disasters. This year’s conference also features a keynote address by Diemut Strebe on Technology and Art.

Other important topics include:

·       Content sharing and institutional brand protection in an open access and crowdsourcing era

·       Privacy and security considerations related to new technologies

·       Management of exhibit collections, research, and data exchanges across borders

·       Developments in employment and tax law

·       Best practices for navigating controversy in the museum environment

“Continuing our tradition of providing cutting-edge advice on legal and administrative issues facing museums, this year’s course has an incredible faculty line up that will address traditional subjects such as provenance and collections issues, provide key legal updates in the areas of tax and employment, and explore challenges that museums face in today’s evolving digital landscape by discussing considerations such as privacy, social media use, and open access,” said Planning Co-Chair Virginia Gomez of the Smithsonian Institution.
